Editing mpv.conf Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and Raspberry PI Open Source Core (webapp is still closed source) GPLv3 ffmpeg and mpv.
Plex Media Player Or Plex For Windows Offline Downloads DesktopMay support a few more codecs.) Plex for Desktop (Newer): Offline downloads Desktop View only Windows and Mac OSX Fully Closed Source LGPLv3 ffmpeg and mpv.If you want a third option, I maintain a client called MPV Shim that may be helpful to users who need features not present in the newer Plex client yet, such as Linux support, HDR tonemapping, mpv.conf, and arbitrary MPVffmpeg builds. If you want digital passthrough you can apparently configure that through mpv.conf. I suspect the reason why Plex for Desktop is closed source and uses the LGPLv3 versions of mpv and ffmpeg is because they had to embed the Plex Media Server into the program for offline download functionality. Im not sure why they are keeping Plex Media Player separate though, especially since the desktop client is being removed. I needed those options to get 5.1 Dolby Digital to my Sonos Beam over optical via Asus Xonar DX soundcard. Plex Media Player is the old version, which at one point Plex said they would no longer support or maintain, then backed out of that, and they are supporting and updating it, and moving it to a web-based app. Apparently a lot of people did not like that idea, so they backtracked, and will continue maintaining and supporting it. And thats what it is - The web-based app, but in a Windows program that you run without a browser. Plex for Windows is just a Windows client, but not with all the bells and whistles Plex Media Player has. It will play the videos, but you cant tweak settings for your server with it - Only settings for the client. ![]() The TV client in Plex Media Player (which is very different in appearancebehavior) is also web-based. Plex recently announced they were abandoning this client in favor of Plex for Windows, which does not even have cast support working yet. They claimed no one used the PMP client which resulted in a ton of backlash from the community causing them to continue to support the client. TB - 1346 Movies - 11842 Episodes 1 point 5 months ago The windows app is basically the same as the web interface. But I think the Media Player is good enough for settings changes and such. I used the windows one for a while and then switched over to Media Player level 1 -1 points 5 months ago The latter is the server software I think. Youre probably better off with the Media Player software rather than relying on the browser. ![]() The Plex Media Server is smart software that makes playing Movies, TV Shows and other media on your computer simple.
